Needlework 12 Days of Christmas - 2nd day...

On the 2nd Day of Christmas...

...yarn and a crochet hook! I always loved feeling yarn in the shops but, when you do not knit or crochet, in the shops it stays. But this year, when I found yarn that was soft and pretty at a shop here called Action, and for only 94 cents per skein, I decided it was time to fulfill a dream to learn to crochet and make my own granny square afghan. I choose purple, light grey, pink and dark grey.

I used this tutorial from a blog and away I went. I am enjoying making them although I feel like I need practice. I want to make this afghan large enough to really wrap up in so I guess practice I will get as I only have 12 made so far...

Can you believe that I am already thinking ahead to the next one from granny hexagons? Humm...maybe I should finish this one first. *grins*

You are doing a great job. they look perfect of course. I would expect no less from you. haha.
Take my advice and start sewing them as you go. At the end it is a chore and tends to be very boring. As you go is not so bad. The voice of experience is telling you this. I hate sewing them together.
Love you, Mom

these squares look great. the crocheting will get better and better and it's addictive! I thought about crocheting today too, but decided against it. it's familytime here...

Beautiful colours Heidi ~ I am working on one myself at the minute & like you I'm a novice at crocheting so it will be a long process ~ I hope mine turn out as good as yours x

Your squares look wonderful. I think that crochet can be addictive, and for a project like you're doing, very portable so you can take them anywhere and work on them.

Good for you to accomplish a goal and learn something new! My fingers cramp too bad when I crochet and hold the hook so I can't do this anymore. I did make a couple of afghans though when I was a newlywed. I leave this to my MIL now!

Wow Heidi, way to go girl! You can surely say there's a new addiction on it's way to your home.
We are now at Lake Tahoe. Lots of snow. This afternoon we drove by a Joan s fabric store just by accident! Oh, how I love that kind of candystore!!!

I am so proud of you Heidi for learning something new and doing it so well!!!!!! Your squares are beautiful, I love the colors....I am finishing a granny square afghan for my dad as we speak, in light rose, dark rose, light green, dark green, and black. I am sewing all the squares together now, but I like your mom's advice to sew as you go....great idea! Keep up the good work and welcome to the addictive hobby with yarn and hook.

I think crochet is very relaxing. I hadn't done much for a while, but I made several Christmas presents this year. Once you get the rhythm going it seems to flow without too much thought or maybe I just have simple patterns!

Oh! I love these colors. What a beautiful afghan these squares will make. I want to do more crocheting, although something other than all the dishcloths I've been making. Sometimes practicality wins out. And I agree - sew them together as you complete them, otherwise it might not get done.

Leuk dat je ook aan de granny squares begonnen bent. Mooie wolletjes gebruik je. Pas op want het is verslavend! Ik ben nu met een plaid in Larksfootstitch bezig, maar ga als die af is weer verder met mijn granny squares.
Fijne week

LOL--I think it's part of being a needleworker, that you are dreaming of the next project and the one after that before you finish what you're currently working on! Beautiful crocheting!

Lovely squares, they are actually square, which is quite an achievement for someone who never did crochet before, well done! Just keep going and before you know you will actually get to the second one ;-)!

O, now I get it.. This is what you mean by 12 days of Christmas needlework.. duhhhh, and I'm not even blond.
Love the squares, need to work on mine too. Maybe tonight I will.
And listen to your mother, I did what she is telling you to do, with the one I made for Elly.
It's more fun, and it works motivating

Hm. Great minds think alike, because yesterday, my mother taught me how to crochet and I'm VERY anxious to get to the fabulous Woltboetiek in Etten-Leur tomorrow to stock up on crochet hooks and yarn.
I'm deeply impressed with your squares. Have fun, Heidi!

Much love,
Annemarie.
